From Ambiguity to Accountability: Culture Transformation at NYU Langone Health

The recent issue of Forbes features the article, “Changing the Culture of An Organization: The NYU Langone Health Case Study,” by William A. Haseltine. In it, Haseltine describes key elements of the dramatic transformation of NYU Langone, a CHL member organization. Critical to this process was shifting to a data-driven approach to measuring performance and impact.

“I wanted to eliminate what I call the ether of ambiguity, the data free atmosphere wherein people are not accountable for their performance,” said Robert Grossman, Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health.

The piece covers challenges likely to be faced at any organization undergoing transformation: shifting the status quo, breaking down silos, and eliminating hierarchical management structures, as well as designing systems of data-driven accountability.

With a career at the forefront of medical research and application, author William A. Haseltine has been named by TIME Magazine as one of the “25 Most Influential Global Business Executives.” Haseltine offers an industry insider’s perspective to NYU Langone’s journey, which he more thoroughly detailed in his book, World Class, A Story of Adversity, Transformation, and Success at NYU Langone Health

We look forward to hearing more from William at the CHL Learning Visit hosted by NYU Langone Health in November, 2019. He will be a featured speaker in our sessions on measuring and managing performance for the short- and long-term.
